Who Is Vegas Jones? The Story Behind the Name

If there is one artist who has managed to combine the extravagant aesthetics of Italian trap with a deeply introspective approach to songwriting, it is Vegas Jones.

Born Matteo Privitera in 1994, in Garbagnate Milanese, and raised in Cinisello Balsamo, just outside Milan, he has developed an identity that has always moved between two seemingly distant worlds: American rap culture and the reality of the Italian suburbs.

Even his stage name tells part of that story. Vegas comes from Vincent Vega, the iconic character played by John Travolta in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, while Jones is a tribute to Nas, whose real name is Nasir Jones. Two references that bring together cinema and classic hip-hop, both of which have played an important role in shaping his artistic universe.

His music has always reflected this contrast. On one side, luxury cars, designer clothing, extravagant imagery and an unmistakable attitude. On the other, lyrics filled with personal reflections, doubts, memories and observations about the environment that shaped him.

It is precisely this duality that makes Vegas Jones an interesting figure within Italian rap: an artist who has never been afraid of exaggeration, but who has always had something more to say beneath the surface.

From Independent Beginnings to Malibu: The Rise of Vegas Jones

His journey began around 2012, performing freestyle sessions and developing his skills within the local hip-hop scene. In 2013, he released Funky Shit Vol. 1, while his participation in Honiro's One Shot Game competition helped him gain early recognition. Projects such as Oro Nero further contributed to establishing his name among emerging Italian rappers.

The turning point came in 2016, with Gratta & Vinci, his involvement in the Dogozilla Family – the collective led by Don Joe, producer and member of Club Dogo – and, above all, the release of Chic Nisello.

The project quickly became a defining moment in his career. More than just a collection of tracks, it was a declaration of identity. Cinisello Balsamo was no longer simply the place he came from: it became the central element of his artistic language, an imaginary that connected local references, street culture, ambition and the desire to make it beyond the boundaries of the neighbourhood.

In 2017, Vegas Jones signed with Universal Music, opening a new chapter in his career. Singles such as Yankee Candle and Burberry Freestyle anticipated the release of his first major studio album, Bellaria, on 23 March 2018.

The project marked his definitive breakthrough. Driven by the success of Malibu, which became one of the most recognisable tracks of that period, Bellaria reached the top of the Italian charts and achieved Platinum certification.

For a while, Malibu seemed to be everywhere. Its sound became part of the soundtrack of Italian summer, while Vegas Jones established himself as one of the most recognisable names of the new rap generation.

Yet, even at the height of his commercial success, there was always another side to his music.

In November 2019, he released La Bella Musica through Sony Music/RCA. A more mature and personal project, it explored different emotional territories, moving away from some of the more immediate formulas of his previous releases. For many listeners, it remains one of the most underrated records in his discography: an album that deserves to be rediscovered for its writing, atmosphere and artistic ambition.

Following a quieter period, his return gradually took shape with Primetime, the seven-track EP released on 11 April 2025. The project represented a new phase of artistic expression, putting his writing and personal perspective back at the centre.

Then came the moment many longtime fans had been waiting for: the return to the world of Chic Nisello.

Beyond the Image: Why Vegas Jones Is More Than Just an Aesthetic

There is a recurring misunderstanding surrounding Vegas Jones: the idea that his music is primarily about appearance, luxury and showing off.

Of course, the visual side has always been part of his identity. Mercedes-Benz references, leather jackets, designer brands and the yellow Ferrari 348 associated with the Primetime era have contributed to creating a recognisable aesthetic.

But reducing his artistic personality to that imagery means overlooking what has always made his writing interesting.

Behind the extravagant attitude lies an artist who frequently turns his attention towards much more personal subjects: growing up in the suburbs, the pressure of success, family, faith, uncertainty and the difficulty of understanding one's own direction.

His music often operates through contrasts. The celebration of material success can sit alongside reflections on loneliness; confidence can coexist with vulnerability; the desire to escape one's surroundings can be accompanied by an almost nostalgic attachment to them.

This is also why the label of an underrated artist continues to appear so frequently in conversations among his listeners. Beyond the tracks that achieved mainstream recognition, his catalogue contains a more reflective dimension that deserves equal attention.

A particularly interesting example came in June 2026, when a live acoustic performance in a garage surrounded by vintage Mercedes cars went viral. Sharing the performance with Silent Bob, Vegas stripped the music back to its essentials: voice, microphone and a completely different atmosphere from the production associated with his more recognisable tracks.

The setting was unmistakably Vegas Jones, but the performance highlighted something else: the strength of his songwriting when the aesthetic becomes secondary to the music itself.

Chic Nisello 2 and Nel Dubbio: Revisiting the Past Without Living in It

Ten years after the original project, Vegas Jones has returned to the world that introduced him to a much wider audience.

Released in May 2026, Chic Nisello 2 is not simply an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of the first chapter. It revisits the visual and cultural references that shaped his early identity – the distinctive towers of Cinisello, the road signs, the Mercedes and the imagery of the northern Milan suburbs – through the perspective of an artist who has experienced an entirely different stage of life.

The central idea is not nostalgia, but evolution.

The neighbourhood remains the starting point, yet the person telling the story has changed. The ambitions are different, the experiences are greater and the relationship with the past has become more complex.

On 14 October 2026, Vegas Jones introduced another important piece of this new chapter with Nel Dubbio, a single released through Universal Music Italia.

Intimate and introspective, the track explores the difficult moments in which uncertainty becomes impossible to ignore. Its central contrast is expressed through a simple but powerful question: burn or shine? Two possibilities, two different directions and a decision that eventually has to be made.

The song reflects on the tension between ambition and fear, the desire to move forward and the difficulty of knowing which path to follow. Rather than presenting doubt as something to overcome immediately, Vegas approaches it as an essential part of personal growth.

The result is a track dedicated to anyone who has experienced a period of uncertainty, lost their direction and had to find the courage to start again.

With Chic Nisello 2 and Nel Dubbio, Vegas Jones is reconnecting with the origins of his career while making room for a more mature and reflective perspective.

1 December 2026: Vegas Jones Returns to Milan for the Chic Nisello Anniversary

And this is where the story comes full circle.

On Tuesday, 1 December 2026, at 9:00 PM, Vegas Jones will take the stage at Fabrique Milano for a special event entitled Chic Nisello – 10 Anni Dall'inizio di Tutto, produced by Trident Music.

This will be more than an ordinary concert. It will be an opportunity to celebrate an entire decade of music, bringing together the different stages of his career in one evening.

Accompanied by a live band, Vegas Jones will revisit some of the most significant tracks in his discography, from the early days of Chic Nisello to the commercial success of Bellaria, the more intimate atmosphere of La Bella Musica and his latest releases.

Special guests and friends will also join him on stage, making the anniversary a collective celebration of the people and experiences that have accompanied his journey.

The evening will also offer the opportunity to hear the musical world of Chic Nisello 2 live, alongside Nel Dubbio, the single that has introduced this new chapter.

For those who discovered Vegas Jones through Malibu, it will be a chance to revisit the tracks that defined an important period of Italian rap. For longtime listeners, it will be something more personal: a return to the music that accompanied their own stories over the years.

Ten Years Later, the Story Still Begins in Cinisello

There is something particularly meaningful about celebrating ten years of Chic Nisello in Milan.

The project was born from a very specific geographical and cultural identity, but its impact eventually travelled far beyond the boundaries of Cinisello Balsamo. What started as an independent expression of a local reality became part of a much wider conversation within Italian hip-hop.

Vegas Jones has experienced the different sides of that journey: the early mixtape culture, the arrival of major-label success, the pressure of mainstream recognition and the freedom to explore more personal musical directions.

Not every chapter has received the same attention, and perhaps that is precisely why this anniversary feels so relevant. It offers an opportunity to look beyond the commercial milestones and rediscover the artistic identity that has remained present throughout his career.

From the energy of Malibu to the introspection of La Bella Musica, from the return of Chic Nisello 2 to the uncertainty explored in Nel Dubbio, Vegas Jones continues to move between two dimensions that have always defined him: the ambition to reach somewhere new and the awareness of where he comes from.

Ten years later, Cinisello is still at the centre of the story.

On 1 December, Fabrique will become the meeting point between the artist he was in 2016 and the person he has become today. A celebration of music, memories and an identity that has never needed to leave its roots behind to grow.

For an artist who has often been described as underrated, this anniversary is also an invitation to reconsider his place within Italian rap.

Because sometimes, the most interesting stories are not about how far someone has travelled, but about what they have managed to preserve along the way.
